Ekstase und Elend is a freely accessible, multimedia website designed for an intermediate-to-advanced German-language course on the cultural history of German-speaking Central Europe in the twentieth-century. Presenting an inclusive history including women’s history, LGBTQ+ history, Germans of Color, and other historically underrepresented groups, the website features an interactive, multimedia timeline and links to key primary documents and visual culture artifacts for each chapter of the accompanying cultural history text (available for purchase). The website also features scaffolded writing exercises (Forschungsprojekte) to train students in research skills ranging from differentiating between primary and secondary sources all the way to a final research project. The accompanying textbook includes scaffolded assignments such vocabulary-building assignments, comprehension exercises, discussion prompts, and more.
